The way a person was raised and what they are introduced to as a child sticks with them throughout their life and helps form the person they are to become. So things that we are forced as a child to do, and say influence us even now. My family taking me to a Phillies game as a young child influenced me and forced me into becoming a Phillies fan. Culture is a huge aspect of a person’s life that is forcibly influenced on us as a child. This plays a huge part in personality development.
Culture plays a huge part in personality development. As I was researching this idea I came across some interesting research. There are different types of cultural influences and according to the Psychology Wiki, “Collectivist cultures, such as those of China, Korea, and Japan, emphasize family and work group goals above individual needs or desires.” Greece is another country that is a collectivist culture, which is what I am.
Harry C. Triandis and Eunkook M. Suh from the department of Psychology at the University of Illinois did a lot of research and experiments on cultural influences on personality. The things they discovered are very interesting. Depending on what culture you derive from causes you to have different personality traits. They stated that “In collectivist cultures people are interdependent with their in-groups (family, tribe, nation etc.), give priority to the goals of their in-groups, shape their behavior primarily on the basis of in-group norms, and behave in a communal way (Mills & Clark 1982). “ So what does this mean? I take is as, and I will use myself as an example, because I grew up in a Greek home (which is a collectivist culture) I am dependent on my family and let them influence me more than I would outsiders. We stick together as a culture to form a society or strong network of people. I mean let’s face it, were Greek; we’re the best, we invited everything.
